Settled by a group of Scottish Presbyterians beginning in the 1680’s, Matawan was first called New Aberdeen, and then Mount Pleasant. Today, Matawan’s historic town core retains its appeal as a place to live, work, and shop.
Burrowes Mansion 300th Anniversary
On June 3rd and June 4th 2023, the Matawan Historical Society held a historic event honoring the Burrowes Mansion and its 300 years of history. The festivities included a reenactment of the 1778 Mansion raid by the British (see video here), a self-guided walking tour of the Matawan historic district, tours of the Mansion, and many other activities. The anniversary was featured in the Asbury Park Press on June 3rd.

I remember a rope swing being in this approximate area back in the mid 70’s a fun diversion from jumping off the rt 34 bridge in to the lake.

Thank you to everyone that stopped by with donations for our upcoming Summer Rummage Sale & Fundraiser.
We will be collecting items again next Sunday, 4/28, from 5-6 pm in the backyard of Burrowes Mansion (94 Main Street, Matawan, NJ).
All proceeds from our sale will go towards supporting our non-profit charitable organization and maintaining Burrowes Mansion Museum.
Some examples of items we are seeking below:
-Christmas decorations
-Matawan related items
-Functional items
-Vintage items
-Old toys/games
-Old sports items
-Small furnishings
-Electronics
-Home goods
Please nothing large or bulky, non-functional, large electronic items (IE: TVs), couches, bedroom sets, used pillows, dining sets, baby items or used clothing.
We will be collecting items up now through May 30th.
Donation drop off is available Sunday evenings now through May at Burrowes Mansion, or by appointment. Item pickup by our volunteers is also available by request. Please share with friends and family. Feel free to contact us directly through messenger with any questions.
