Please bring a WRAPPED gift of $25 in value to participate in the exchange. You will be encouraged to “steal” another gift for the same value. It is a real blast and a good way to clean out those gifts you got a few days before! In this illustrated presentation\, Dr. Veit will discuss the book he co-wrote with Maxine Lurie\, Envisioning New Jersey. \nThe presentation uses numerous images and a series of carefully selected little-known incidents from our state’s history to illustrate New Jersey’s history. Joe published his first Book in 2014\, Owning New Jersey: Historic Tales of War\, Property Disputes & the Pursuit of Happiness. \nNew Jersey’s land records and deeds are unlikely sources for a thrilling tale\, but reveal little-known\, fascinating history. A detailed story of the founding of the Garden State 350 years ago is preserved in these papers. The state’s boundaries were drawn in such documents centuries ago\, even if the authors never stepped foot in North America. The archives hide heroes\, like the freed African Americans who fought for their right to own their piece of the state. DESCRIPTION:Cemeteries are invaluable historical and cultural resources\, yet they remain among the most vulnerable heritage sites\, facing threats from environmental degradation\, neglect\, and development pressures. Effective cemetery preservation requires a multifaceted approach that balances historical integrity\, legal protections\, and community engagement. \nIn this talk\, Monmouth County Park System archaeologist Kristen Hohn discusses the challenges facing burial sites today and examines best practices in documentation\, conservation\, and advocacy. Using case studies from Monmouth County\, including several sites in Matawan and Aberdeen\, she describes the importance of sustainable preservation efforts to ensure these sacred landscapes endure for future generations. \n  \nAbout Kristen Hohn \nKristen T. Hohn (MA\, RPA) is a professional archaeologist and senior historic preservation specialist with a passion for the care\, interpretation\, and preservation of material culture. She works for the Monmouth County Park System while also running her own historic consulting company. \nMs. Hohn holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology\, specializing in Historical Archaeology\, from Monmouth University\, as well as a Certificate in Historic Preservation from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities (MARCH) at Rutgers University. She currently serves as a trustee of the Old Yellow Meeting House and Cemetery Association and is a past president of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey. \nA native of Matawan\, New Jersey\, Ms. Hohn is dedicated to preserving the past and making history accessible to a broader audience. When she’s not transcribing 18th-century documents\, she enjoys backpacking and traveling with her husband and two young boys. \nFree admission with refreshments following the meeting. SUMMARY:February Presentation and Meeting: Jersey Shore Railroading and Tourism
DESCRIPTION:Railroads\, Tourism\, and Commuters at the Jersey Shore\nSpeaker: Bill Elwell \nNestled halfway between two of America’s most important cities\, the Jersey Shore seems perfectly positioned to be a vacation destination. What was once desolate beachfront did not become a vacationing mecca overnight. Railroads were the defining factor in creating and shaping the development of the Shore as a center for everything from day trips to whole summer vacations. As the winds of technology changed\, the passenger-centric Jersey Shore railroads were able to turn into the breeze and refocus to commuters\, redefining themselves and the Jersey Shore as a whole. This work explores railroads and their effects on Jersey Shore\, especially vacationing and commuting\, focusing through the lens of railroad-publications like timetables and advertisements. \nBill Elwell is an adjunct professor of history at Monmouth University and a lifelong Jersey Shore resident. Much of that life has been spent exploring all different aspects of railroads\, especially local ones\, through history\, modeling\, and railfanning. Additionally\, Bill is on the Board of the Ocean County Historical Society\, a member of the Anthracite Roads Historical Society and West Jersey Chapter NRHS\, formerly worked in historical outreach for Monmouth County\, and is proud to help share our common story. \nFree admission with refreshments following the meeting.
