DESCRIPTION:Cemeteries are invaluable historical and cultural resources\, yet they remain among the most vulnerable heritage sites\, facing threats from environmental degradation\, neglect\, and development pressures. Effective cemetery preservation requires a multifaceted approach that balances historical integrity\, legal protections\, and community engagement. \nIn this talk\, Monmouth County Park System archaeologist Kristen Hohn discusses the challenges facing burial sites today and examines best practices in documentation\, conservation\, and advocacy. Using case studies from Monmouth County\, including several sites in Matawan and Aberdeen\, she describes the importance of sustainable preservation efforts to ensure these sacred landscapes endure for future generations. \n  \nAbout Kristen Hohn \nKristen T. Hohn (MA\, RPA) is a professional archaeologist and senior historic preservation specialist with a passion for the care\, interpretation\, and preservation of material culture. She works for the Monmouth County Park System while also running her own historic consulting company. \nMs. Hohn holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology\, specializing in Historical Archaeology\, from Monmouth University\, as well as a Certificate in Historic Preservation from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities (MARCH) at Rutgers University. She currently serves as a trustee of the Old Yellow Meeting House and Cemetery Association and is a past president of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey. \nA native of Matawan\, New Jersey\, Ms. Hohn is dedicated to preserving the past and making history accessible to a broader audience. DESCRIPTION:Railroads\, Tourism\, and Commuters at the Jersey Shore\nSpeaker: Bill Elwell \nNestled halfway between two of America’s most important cities\, the Jersey Shore seems perfectly positioned to be a vacation destination. What was once desolate beachfront did not become a vacationing mecca overnight. Railroads were the defining factor in creating and shaping the development of the Shore as a center for everything from day trips to whole summer vacations. As the winds of technology changed\, the passenger-centric Jersey Shore railroads were able to turn into the breeze and refocus to commuters\, redefining themselves and the Jersey Shore as a whole. This work explores railroads and their effects on Jersey Shore\, especially vacationing and commuting\, focusing through the lens of railroad-publications like timetables and advertisements. \nBill Elwell is an adjunct professor of history at Monmouth University and a lifelong Jersey Shore resident. Much of that life has been spent exploring all different aspects of railroads\, especially local ones\, through history\, modeling\, and railfanning. Additionally\, Bill is on the Board of the Ocean County Historical Society\, a member of the Anthracite Roads Historical Society and West Jersey Chapter NRHS\, formerly worked in historical outreach for Monmouth County\, and is proud to help share our common story. \nFree admission with refreshments following the meeting. DESCRIPTION:Archaeological Treasures of Matawan and Aberdeen  \nSpeaker: Ralph Phillips \nThe Matawan Historical Society is delighted to welcome Ralph Phillips\, a distinguished New Jersey archaeologist who spent his childhood in the Matawan/Aberdeen area during the 1940s and 50s. Growing up when much of Matawan was still undeveloped\, Ralph explored the local farms and fields\, where he discovered his remarkable talent for discovering Native American and colonial artifacts. Archaeology became his lifelong passion\, and he was later joined in his endeavors by his wife\, Lynn. \nRalph’s collection\, accumulated over 70 years\, contains many thousands of items\, including projectile points\, tools\, and everyday objects used by the local Lenape people\, as well as some by the Paleo-Indians.  He has also collected many colonial-era objects\, including musket balls from local Revolutionary War sites. \nIn this talk\, Ralph will share captivating stories of his quest to uncover local archaeological treasures at numerous Native American camp sites in the Matawan/Aberdeen area. (Matawan\, situated at the crossroads of the Minisink and Chingarora trails\, was a busy hub of Native American life.) Ralph will describe the settlements and daily practices of the local Native people\, showcasing artifacts from his collection. He will also discuss his extensive work with the New Jersey archaeological community and recount his sometimes-harrowing encounters with local landowners. \nMore About Ralph Phillips \nRalph is the former president of the Monmouth County Chapter of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey where he served on its Executive Board.  He has done site and research work for the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation\, as well as the Monmouth County Park System.  He has worked with the top archaeologists in New Jersey\, including Herbert Kraft\, and done seminal work at the Monmouth Battlefield with Gary Wheeler Stone and Dan Sivilich.  As part of that effort\, Ralph was a founding member of BRAVO\, the Battlefield Restoration and Archaeological Volunteer Organization.  This group’s analysis of musket balls and other projectiles found at the Battlefield site yielded detailed information about specific troop encounters and battle patterns at the Battle of Monmouth. \nRalph has received numerous state and local awards for his work.  For his efforts at the Monmouth Battlefield\, he was honored in a special New Jersey General Assembly Resolution signed by speaker Jack Collins.  He received the 1999 NJ Historic Preservation Award\, as well as the Archaeological Society of New Jersey Achievement Award.  The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) presented him with a Certificate of Merit for his contributions to local history in the areas of communication and education.  Ralph was also particularly honored when the Town of Brielle proclaimed his birthday to be “Ralph Phillips Day.” \nRalph is currently working with the Matawan Historical Society on a project to preserve and display his unique collection of artifacts. \nFree admission with refreshments following the meeting. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 5th\, 12 pm – 5 pm (Rain Date – 10/6) \nMatawan Day Fall Festival will be held in a new location this year. It is moving from Main Street to Terhune Park and Hourihan Field. Part of Broad Street will be included as well as South Street. \nSince we will not be on Main Street this year\, we will not be giving tours at Burrowes Mansion but instead will have a few tables at Matawan Day to sell merchandise\, showcase some of our photos and items\, collect memberships\, and also host a contest – corn shucking contest and crown the winner the Corn King. \nWe need help at our booth. Please email Cathy.Zavorskas@MatawanBorough.com at the time you can work. Here are the shifts. We will need at least 5 people for each two-hour segment. 8:30 am – 10 am – help pack up from Burrowes Mansion\, and then to the route that we need you to bring it to our location. 10 am – 12 pm 12 pm – 2 pm \n2 pm – 4 pm \n4 pm – 6 pm – help take down the booth and bring it back to Burrowes Mansion \nWe will need at least 5 people per hour. DESCRIPTION:Friday July 12th\, save the date!\n\n\nThe Matawan Aberdeen Historical Society is proud to present “The 108th Anniversary of the 1916 Matawan Shark Attack Walking Tours.”\n\n\nJoin us to hear the incredible story of tragedy and heroism that shocked a nation and inspired the movie “Jaws.”\n\n\n\nThis year’s event will be held one day only\, July 12th\, which is the anniversary of the attacks. Join us for a fascinating walking tour of Matawan that will tell the incredible story at multiple sites all linked to the shark attack. Total distance traveled for each tour will be 1.5 miles and will last an estimated 1.5 hrs.\n\n\n\nThe donation per ticket will be $30 per person. Children 12 and under are FREE. All proceeds will go towards supporting our non-profit organization and maintaining the Burrowes Mansion Museum.\n\n\n\nTours will be sold as three separate tour groups\, each limited to 40 people. Free snacks and refreshments will also be provided to all guests. The tour times on July 12 are 6:00 pm\, 7:30 pm\, and 9:00 pm.\n\n\n\n\n\nPresale ticket access will be begin Tuesday 6/25. Matawan Aberdeen Historical Society members will be given first access and receive a discounted donation price of $20 per ticket. Any remaining available tickets will then go on sale to the general public 6/27 through an eventbrite link that will be posted on our Facebook page.
