Longstreet House
This home was built by Aaron Longstreet. Longstreet was born in Holmdel in 1805. He married Catherine Lloyd and farmed until 1842. In that year, when he purchased a tract of land that included Burrowes property, they moved to Matawan.
In the 1850s Longstreet sold the Burrowes Mansion (which was referred to as a tavern) to Dr. Pitman, a dentist. Longstreet began a lumber business which prospered along with other enterprises.
In 1873, he sold this home to Thomas Thorne, a merchant in dry goods and groceries.
This home is now known as the Sanford-Hopkins Homestead.
