The Terhune House
This land was once a cow pasture and was owned by Dayton and Crawford until purchased by Judge Henry Stafford Terhune. The land extended to Broad Street and the backyard had a putting green.
Henry Stafford Terhune was a former state senator and vice president of the Long Branch Trust Company. He gave the land that is known as Terhune Park to the Borough of Matawan. The marriage to Dr. Jackson’s step-daughter, Mary Crane on July 22, 1896, was the most elaborate ever to occur in Matawan. (See newspaper account at right.)
Architectural Notes
Henry Terhune built his home in 1910. It was designed by Ernest A. Arend and built by C. D. Thorne and Co. of Red Bank. The original cost in 1911 was $30,000.00.
