Three Centuries of Building in Matawan
Highlighted on the Historic Places gallery page is a selection of structures, building types, and styles from nearly every period of Matawan’s development. They were chosen to illustrate the range of the community’s historic resources, as the signposts of Matawan’s change over time. Whether humble or high-style, fully restored or awaiting rehabilitation, each site contributes to an understanding of our town’s past as well as its present identity and sense of place.
This list of buildings is by no means complete. It mostly follows A Guide to Historic Matawan, a self-guided tour brochure published by the Matawan Historical Society. We encourage you to pick up a copy at the Burrowes Mansion Museum, take yourself on the tour, and see these incredible structures in person.
You may also print out a short form of the tour. It does not include the building descriptions, but it does show a map and list of locations.
