Toad Hall
The first owner and resident was Charles Jefferson Wright. He was Lieutenant Colonel of 27th Regiment of the colored troops in the Civil War. He commanded the troops at the Battle of Crater.
In 1889 he founded the New York Military Academy at Cornwall-on-the-Hudson. Wright bought the Glenwood Institute in 1908 and established the Matawan Military Academy. Wright also founded the New Jersey Military Academy at Freehold. It closed in 1949.
Architectural Notes
Built c. 1909-1914. Period revival Brick with large studio window on the front facades. Double Front Doors with classical columns. In recent years, an addition was built in rear portion of this home.
