Lassen, Brent William

Name: Lassen, Brent William, ST3, USN

Local address: 25 Beechwood Terrace, Matawan, NJ

Brent, born July 21, 1952 in South Amboy, was the fourth of seven children born to Foster Carl Lassen (1925-2018) and Edna May Little (1928-2022). Brent’s father Foster served on PT boats in the Pacific in WWII, and his grandfather John Charles Lassen (1899-1937) the 8th Cavalry Regiment in 1918 – 1919.

As a youth, Brent was active in the Boy Scouts and the YMCA. He graduated from Matawan High School in 1972, and immediately followed his father’s footsteps, joining the Navy and reporting to the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Il. He subsequently became a sonar technician, and most likely attended Sonar Technician “A” School, which is currently in San Diego. He was then assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Belknap (CG-26). Brent planned to enter college after his discharge from the Navy in March 1976.

On November 22, 1975, while escorting the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) off Sicily in the Ionian Sea, the cruiser collided with the carrier, which decimated the Belknap’s superstructure, killing Brent and six other sailors.

His funeral service was conducted by the Reverend Lewis Kisenwether at the First Baptist in Matawan on December 9, 1975.
