Fountain Avenue – 4

This was the residence of two notable residents of Matawan: W. Stanley Fisher and May Dominick.

Stanley FisherStanley was attacked by a shark in Matawan Creek (Matawan, NJ) while attempting to recover the body of 12-year-old Lester Stillwell. Lester had also been attacked by the shark while swimming with friend in Matawan Creek. Stanley lived for a few hours after the attack and then died due to blood loss. He died a hero and  both Stanley and Lester were buried on July 15, 1916, in the Rose Hill Cemetery of Matawan.

May DominickThe Dominick Family:  May Bergen Dominick was the first Town Librarian; she retired after 40 years of service. She was also one of the founding members of the Matawan Historical Society. She was married to Edwin Howe Dominick. Mr. Dominick was a member of the Board of Education. Together, they had a daughter, Ruth. In 1948, Ruth married Frank Howard Lloyd. They lived at 167 Main Street. Mrs. Dominick passes away in 1982.

Following her death in 1982, the house was purchased by the Evans family and was made into a two-family residence. It was rented out but then was left vacant for years. Recently it was purchased and has been newly renovated.
