Cartan House
This home originally belonged to Andrew Cartan. He was a well-known and a lifelong resident of Matawan.
He worked as a Telegraph operator, in both Matawan & South Amboy stations by the New York & Long Branch Railroads.
In 1887, he established a general store in Matawan (92 Main Street) and moved the telegraph office there until telephones came into regular use.
He became the Farmers & Merchants National Bank director and one of the largest stockholders.
Cartan was also a trustee of the First Baptist Church.
Architectural Notes
Built c. 1850, Italianate Architecture, 5 symmetrical bays. Classical doorway framed with pilasters, side lights, and modillion cornice. The porch has slotted posts and scroll brackets on curved cornices.
