Name: Weisner, Gregory “Greg” Charles, PFC, USA
Local address: 28 Waverly Place, Aberdeen, NJ
Gregory was the youngest of five children of Robert Alden Weisner (1917-1978) and Edna Jane Moulton (1922-2017). Born January 27, 1947 in Columbus, IN, he resided in that community until he completed his junior year of high school, whereupon he moved to Aberdeen and resided with his sister Nancy Moody in Strathmore. He attended Matawan High School for one year, graduating with the class of 1965. That year’s school annual indicates he was in the drama club and jazz band. Fellow graduates remembered him as a “nice guy” and “the best dancer in the class.”
Returning to Columbus after graduation, he was initially employed with Arvin Industries in that community, but subsequently enrolled in the Embry Little Aeronautical Institute in Delray, FL, in January of 1966.
On March 16, 1967, he was drafted into the army and attended basic training at Ft. Campbell, KY and received subsequent instruction at Ft. Polk, LA. In August of 1967, he was sent to Vietnam, assigned to Company “C”, First Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division.
In January of 1968, Greg contracted malaria and was confined to the military hospital in Cam Ranh Bay. He returned to his unit in February and was serving as point man on a patrol on February 8, 1968 near Đắk Tô in the Kom Tum Province when he was reporting missing in action – his mother received a telegram on Valentine’s Day advising her of this information. Prior to the military officially pronouncing him KIA, she received a letter from his squad mates informing her that Greg spotted an ambush awaiting the rest of the troops, and instead of taking cover, exposed himself to enemy fire as he returned to his squad to warn them, saving them, but losing his life. He was 21 years old.
Greg is buried in the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, IN.
