Garrett Hier – Beyers

This home was occupied by Capt. Garrett Hier (1797 -1856). He married Sarah and built his home using stone and wood from his schooner days. He was a private in the war of 1812, serving with Capt. James Ten Eyck in the NJ Militia and received a land bounty of 40 acres for his service (see photograph).

113-main-docIn 1860s, Capt. Benjamin Tuthill moved here. Later, his son William H. and daughter Margaret lived in the house after their father’s death. (c. 1940)

In 1948 proprietor William Porter moved the Central Tavern here.  Central Tavern later changed ownership to Jerry Beyer and became the celebrated Jerry Beyer’s Restaurant (1972 – 1991+).

113-main-beyerThe La Riviera Lounge then was established in 2007 by proprietors Ida and Ruben Bea.

It is now the John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home.
